Graceful Disgraceful Beauty

There is definitely a lack of positive imagery showing older women out there, although it is getting better. Instagram has definitely helped form a community of pro-age warriors. I want to produce some fun, untouched, non- stereotypical beauty/makeup images of older faces. Highlighting with a shout out to ourselves (me included) and the wider community

‘Hey, See me I’m great’

I wonder if when we look in the mirror our dread of ageing is partly triggered from how we are made to feel in our society. So, let’s try and change that narrative.

Lets make a difference one face at a time.

So here we go! my first beauty image on GD Beauty blog post and yes, and this one is me.

A quick chat about beauty

Here I am answering my own questions

Have you sunbathed over the years, and have you always worn a SPF?

Yes, and as a teenager in the 70’s with very fair skin I did get burnt and do have the signs of sun damage. I have worn spf for many years with much knowledge and hindsight, now only factor 50 on my face

Has your beauty routine changed as you have got older?

not much – I am a low maintenance type of a gal and one with very sensitive skin. In fact I am using less product due to allergy, which seems to have heightened during menopause

If so how, what do you do now?

Still wet cleanse with water and remove with a clean flannel and always moisturise. As a make up artist, I say- what you do is often more important that what you use. I always massage with my moisturiser and try and fit my facial exercises into my day.

Do you visit a beauty salon?

Often

Occasionally x

Never

If yes, what treatments do you choose.

I will always choose a facial first, then body massage. Never anything fancy. Just hands on.

Do you think the stresses we face and the way we live our lives make a dramatic difference to how we age or is it all down to genetics?

Stress definitely has an impact on visible ageing even short time lack of sleep can show in your face. Your skin is the largest organ of the body and lets you get away with nothing. We all suffer different stresses in our life and of course illness, pain, medication, drug and alcohol use, play their part too. This is a massive subject and could discuss so many reasons for visible ageing. However, genes play a huge part in how we visibly age so take a look at your mum and dad.

How do you feel about your own ageing journey?

I’m not thrilled, but every day we grow older. I prefer the natural pro-age route and prepared to put the work in – attempting to keep fit and healthy and hopefully inspiring others to do the same. Avoiding the stereotypical vision of ageing – hence this blog. Saying that I have no judgement of those who choose a nip and tuck (when at the appropriate age) and completely understand why. I do think the support of other women helps the journey, it is a weird thing how we change through the decades and even weirder to try to look 30 at 60 🙂

Do you think any negativity that we may feel about ourselves as we grow older is fueled by a negative society view on older women?

I think it can be. If society considered older women to be beautiful and we really valued our older generation and cared more, especially as people are living longer. Really 50s and 60s should be considered our prime and women in their prime should be seen as beautiful and wise – she says as a women of those years and maybe visible ageing wouldnt be something to dread.

Do you think seeing untouched fun and positive imagery can make a difference to the view on age?

Definitely

Have you ever had or consider having cosmetic surgery or invasive procedures ?

No, not yet anyway
