Age Diversity
With the start of London fashion week, it got me thinking.
Do you think there is a lack of positive imagery and representation of age diversity in our fashion and beauty magazines and on the catwalk?
We do get the occasional older model or a flurry, if it is the on-trend for the season or beautiful classic models made to look a bit frumpy appealing to the over 80’s, but targeting the over 50’s – excuse me! When I was younger working as a make up artist in the world of fashion the magazine editors would say that older does not sell and older women prefer to see clothes on younger models . (Not sure this is still the case, but we can suspect)
Hello!!! I am now 60 and this is ridiculous I would much rather see fab clothes on great age-appropriate models and this seems to be the opinion of the over 50’s women I have asked. I think older women look amazing sporting a modern twist and am very excited to share my Graceful Disgraceful beauty and make up images that I am working on. (coming soon) Gone are the days of “Mutton Dressed as Lamb” as the saying went, lets start a new saying” Beautiful Ewe”
Make up trends Autumn Winter 21/22
Wellbeing, self care and sustainability with an emphasis on comfort is very much the trend as we move towards a different way of living, with more and more people working from home and caring more and more for the environment we live in. I see a move towards less make-up and a demand on products to be more sustainable and environment aware with packaging and production.
Saying all that -Make up is still a thing – thank goodness Hehe!
Natural healthy glowing skin with natural tones on eyes and lips is a strong trend. However, there is a fashion for bold colours which can translate via make up with sweeps of colour wash. Also the statement lip is still with us and works very well on older faces creating a lift and an illusion of strength and confidence.

On an age positive note
A mention to a few who are age diverse-one of my fav designers-Vivienne Westwood has never been afraid to show diversity
The designer Roksanda Ilincic presented three generations of women in a short film – Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson and Daisy Bevan – and celebrated family and the emotions of everyday life.

Yuhan Wang’s A/W collection is inspired by traditional Chinese landscape painting and cast sisters, friends, mothers and daughters to represent togetherness.

In 2016 an over 50’s fashion show with all beautiful classic women strutting their stuff. I have not found anything beyond 2016, which lets be honest is a while ago. ( correct me if this is a regular thing) great to see, but prefer to see older and young strutting together not as a separate event. Versace and l’Oreal have used Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren and many of the Supers (still super ) are seen too.
