Sustainable Beauty

Sustainable Beauty – Should we revisit beauty as it was in the past

We are all very aware of our planet right now with COP 26. Last week I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to attend a really interesting webinar with the Sustainable Beauty Coalition and Beauty council and I learnt loads. The overall message is a simple one and easily remembered by the 3 R’s

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

This week I dragged my Mum, Mavis (86) onto my make up chair for my session of Fun non-stereotypical beauty images and chat . Our make up chat was an interesting one. I wanted to touch on how make up was back in the 50’s. My Mum was a Beauty Therapist for a short time before she got married in 1956 and with all the talk about sustainable beauty I got to thinking that perhaps we should return to a simpler beauty routine, with less expectation on what luxury branding and packaging should be. Picking up on the message to reduce the amount of product we use to reuse our bottles and recycle when we can’t.

In the 50’s women appeared very glam to us now with neat bobby pinned hair and red lips but make up packaging and beauty regimes were a much simpler affair. Although metal compacts or glass containers may have been too heavy for what we have become accustom too these days, but surely we can embrace sustainable beauty and be less wasteful, more mindful and channel our 1950’s mothers or Grandmothers’ simpler times.

My beauty chats are all about finding out how women feel about ageing, what affects the way we age and how we feel about it. Talking to my Mum who is in her 80’s was really interesting how her thought process on age has changed at this chapter in her life and exploring a bit about beauty of her younger days.

  • Do you think your own life personal stresses has an impact on how you are visibly ageing or do you think it is genetic? For me I think Genetic, I have my fair share of stress, but I don’t think it has impacted on my visible ageing
  1. How do you feel within yourself as you get older including health? ok, tired and physically harder to do thing, but lead an independent life and I have had to become more confident now I live on my own.
  1. How do you feel about the physical signs of ageing when look in the mirror? Dont like to see the wrinkles and is a reminder of how old I am
  1. Have you or would you consider any intrusive anti-ageing treatments? No

  1. Do you think our societies attitude to ageing has any impact on how you feel about yourself? Not now I am older- I tend to mix mainly with people of a similar age and we have come to terms with the age we are at now.
  1. Do you think seeing untouched fun and positive imagery of older women can make a difference to societies attitude on age? Asking me now at this age – I dont really think so. When you are young you dont think or care about getting older and maybe not that interested in the older generation, Im not sure seeing images of older people will change that. Although women look younger for longer now, so maybe there is a relevance and positive to women as they reach 50+
