My latest Photographic Experience project is ‘Mother and Daughter’ and what a fabulous and fun way to start this project wth a striking theatrical Vaudeville style.
I love bringing a unique edge or theme to each portrait, focusing on capturing the true essence of the person I’m working with and making the experience both enjoyable and memorable. With mother-daughter portraits, I aim to go a step further, exploring their relationship to reflect it authentically in the final images. For this session, Wendy’s lifelong passion for dance—both as a performer and a teacher—provided perfect inspiration. She’s used to dressing up for the countless kids’ dance shows she’s organized, and her youngest daughter, Rosa, has been part of that journey. It felt only natural to create a theatrical narrative, and so the Spencer-Smith show came to life, with Wendy and Rosa shining brilliantly in their roles.”
The Look
I love the Vaudeville look and makeup style, which coincidentally aligns with autumn and winter trends of flushed cheeks and red lips. I was thrilled to bring this look to life, and both Rosa and Wendy were completely on board. Although I initially had some reservations about the bold makeup on Rosa, it beautifully conveyed the story and highlighted just how similar they are. In chatting about the shoot, it became clear that they’re like two peas in a pod. Styling the outfits was a joy—I had a strong vision and was lucky to dive into Wendy’s treasure trove of costumes from past dance shows. Braving an adventurous attic encounter with a dive-bombing bird, Wendy unearthed just what we needed! With a few additions from my own vintage collection, the look was complete.”
What They Said
What a fantastic way to spend an afternoon making memories with my youngest daughter. Karen captured our relationship brilliantly. We love being silly and having fun crazy moments together, yet at the same time we are both a bit strong willed and stubborn which makes the relationship a bit feisty at times. Karen tying it all up to our love of dance and the theatre using a vaudeville theme was perfect.
Wendy Spencer-Smith
Everything was kinda just fun. My favourite photo is the one that my Mum is strangulating me.

The Photographic Experience
“For me, it’s all about the experience—the final image is the bonus at the end. I begin by getting to know my subject, finding a fun and creative concept that truly reflects their personality. Each session kicks off with professional makeup, and with my years of experience as a makeup artist working alongside top photographers, I aim to give the full model treatment. Sitting in the makeup chair is an intimate experience, creating a unique bond that often carries beautifully into the photoshoot itself. I believe this makes for a truly special and memorable photo experience.”
At the moment I am working on 3 projects
- Over 50 and fabulous – Women exude radiance and beauty regardless of age.
- Mother and Daughter – A new project working with women of different generations.
- You and Your Pony – A little more challenging, but fun. Capturing that special bond you have with your horse.
Booking a photo experience
Currently, all sessions are by invitation only as I build a portfolio of work. “I started my photo sessions for fun and as a way to promote my make up and Graceful Disgraceful workshops. It’s been such a joy—everyone has truly enjoyed both the experience and the images we create together. So next year, I’m considering offering The Photographic Experience as part of Graceful Disgraceful, making paid sessions available. If this sounds interesting to you, please reach out—I’d love to hear your thoughts!”
