Wear a Hat
Sun protection is such an important message, especially with the growing cases of skin cancer as we get older. I have just completed a Skin Cancer early detection course and with the strong sunrays we are experiencing at the moment I am revisiting a post I did last year with a few updates.
Some facts
Did you know that almost all skin cancers are caused by Ultraviolet Radiation UVR from the sun and are almost entirely preventable. There has been a particular rise in cases among adults aged 55 and over. Case rates among this age group have risen by 195% since the 1990s. According to Cancer research UK 1 in 35 Women and 1 in 41 Men will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer in their liftime.

The best protection from the sun is to cover up and one of the cooler ways to do that is invest in a great hat. Hats provide a physical barrier that shields your face, neck, and often your shoulders from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV radiation is a leading cause of premature aging, including wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. By wearing a hat, you’re minimizing your skin’s exposure to these damaging rays, which in turn helps maintain a youthful, radiant complexion.
Incorporating a hat into your daily routine is a simple yet powerful step towards protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful effects. This essential accessory not only aids in maintaining a youthful, glowing complexion but also plays a vital role in preventing serious health issues like sunburn and skin cancer. As a make up artist and beauty writer, it’s important to emphasize that true beauty is not just about looking good but also about taking care of your skin’s health for the long term. So next time you step out into the sun, don’t forget to top off your look with a stylish, protective hat.

Make up can be a sun barrier too with many foundations containing a spf within. Always read the label as the factor is often lower than is needed for a day out in sunshine. I recommend a factor 50 on your face and these days you can get high factor creams light enough to sit under make up. I use Look Fabulous Forever 50+Serum or La Roche Posey factor 50 both suit my skin, which is a miracle as I am so annoyingly reactive. I have used a Delilah foundation on Mel spf20.
The make up story is summer soft and I love these soft rosey colours on Mel. Make up is trickey when it is hot and for most of us over 50 that is an ongoing situation all year round. If you are by the pool then SPF50 all day long, make up is not necessay. If, however you are out and about I suggest a light base to even the skin and blot gently with a tissue when perspiration appears. Waterproof mascara helps stay a treat, but always harder to remove, be careful not to drag the eyes ferociously (use an oil base eye make up remover) liquid blush is more natural and easier to reapply on hot skin than a powder. Lippy is a must to finish a make up look and love soft creamy colours in summer or just smudge of lipgloss, again easy to retouch.
Mel loved the soft creamy make up and she looks fabulous in her wonderful Panama hat. Summer ready.
