Silver Sisters
Juliana 52 is a professional model,Silver Sister and a great example why older models are perfect to represent those over 50 and a role model to inspire anyone taking the plunge to go grey. It can be a brave decision or just a natural way to evolve into another chapter of your life. The reality of not taking the step to go grey can be an expensive one and high maintenance depending on your original hair colour.
I have to say I am fairly low maintenance, but my natural colour is a kinda strawberry blonde and although I do have grey coming through it is definitely not a lovely silver and do still add a few honey highlights. I will one day fade to grey though, I would never judge others, so I hope noone judges me for my decision. I do think silver hair is very beautiful.
The best people to voice their opinion on this are those who have made the transformation to a Silver Sister themselves. So here is Julianas chat and if you scroll down I have asked the same questions to my friend Jane who was older than Juliana when she made the decision to go grey and although I donot have an image of Jane I can vouch that she looks fabulous with her Silver transformation.
Beauty Chat
- Was it a difficult decision to not colour your hair.? It wasn’t a difficult decision not to colour my hair – I was just way too lazy to do anything about it ! I knew I’d have to retouch my roots every few weeks – that’s high maintenance !
- How old were you when made the decision ?. I’d started to get a white streak around 16 , but I suppose it was around aged 30 that I’d get a few comments about dyeing my grey hair . I never really considered it , mainly because I actually liked my new colour , once I’d got used to not being a brunette any more .
- Had you coloured your hair before letting it go, or did you make a deliberate decision from the start?I used to play around with my hair colour in my 20s , like we all do ! But the white bit always went a funny colour ! And once, in my 30s, I mistakenly used a semi permanent coloured hair gel . It just made me realise that I actually suited having grey hair , and that I now looked odd with dark hair. So I never really ‘ let it go ‘ as such . It just kind of evolved !
4. As a model do you think you get more work because of your hair colour.? I think it’s taken a while for this hair colour to be seen in a younger, more desirable way. Hair trends and lockdown have all helped to create more acceptance of this colour. I think my hair has helped me to build up more work because it’s very distinctive.
5. Do you think you are treated differently because of your hair colour? . Yes my hair colour is always a talking point ! But it’s always positive . I’m never told I look old .
6. What products do you use on your hair? . I try to use shampoos and conditioners with as many natural ingredients where possible and every few washes I will use a pink or blue shampoo to counteract any yellow tones. I’ve always invested in a good brush , and try to use minimal heat on my hair.
7. What would 25 year old Juliana think of her now? . I think the 25 year old Juliana would be amazed at her confidence at 52 , and how many new things she is still trying !

Jane 62 Chat on turning Silver
1. It was actually an easy decision to not colour my hair. I was seeing more and more women with beautiful, natural grey hair and decided to try that look for myself. At the time I had taken early retirement and thought, “New phase, new look!”
2. I made the decision when I was 58.
3. I had coloured my hair for many years before embracing the grey. I discovered my first grey hairs when I was 30.
4. I don’t think I am treated differently because of my hair colour, I’ve actually received quite a few compliments. My sister was inspired to stop colouring her hair having seen me embracing my grey locks.
5. I use Umberto Giannini Creme de Curl and Pantene Pro V Keratin protect oil.
6. I actually love my silver grey hair and, in many ways, wish I had embraced the grey earlier. Growing the old colour out was frustrating at times, especially when the length of my hair was half grey, half brunette but I’m so glad I didn’t give in to colouring. Fortunately for me, my curls helped to disguise the brown/grey line. As an added bonus, I can treat myself with the money I save from no longer visiting a hair colourist every few weeks!!
