Hollywood Glamour
If you know me you know I love a bit of vintage and this includes inspiration from the old Hollywood movies from Film Noir of the 20’s and 30’s to the stylish iconic films from the 50’s and 60s. The images for this Hollywood Red story was inspired by Hitchcock and I hope you love them as much as I do. I collaborated with the wonderful milliner Tara O’Calloghan, who provided the hats and location for the story.

The History of Red Lips and How to Find Your Perfect Shade
The allure of red lips dates back thousands of years, symbolizing power, beauty, and confidence across cultures and eras. Red lipstick has remained a timeless statement, adapting to trends while holding its iconic status. Here’s a glimpse into its rich history and tips to find the shade that complements you best.
A Brief History of Red Lips
- Ancient Civilizations: In Mesopotamia (around 3500 BCE), women used crushed gemstones to tint their lips. Ancient Egyptians, including Cleopatra, favored deep red shades made from carmine dye derived from insects. Red lips were a sign of wealth and social status.
- Medieval Europe: Red lips fell out of favor due to their association with witchcraft and vanity. However, they reemerged in the 16th century with Queen Elizabeth I, who popularized a stark white face paired with crimson lips.
- 20th Century Revolution: Red lips surged in popularity during the 1920s flapper era, symbolizing rebellion and modernity. Stars like Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s solidified its status as a sultry, glamorous staple.
- Contemporary Trends: Red lipstick remains a bold beauty choice, with shades ranging from classic blue-toned reds to vibrant corals and dark burgundies.
Finding Your Perfect Red Lipstick Shade
Choosing the right red can seem daunting, but considering your undertone and personal style can help.
- Understand Your Undertones:
- Cool Undertones: Opt for blue-based reds, like cherry or berry shades. These complement fair or pinkish skin tones and can also make teeth appear whiter.
- Warm Undertones: Look for orange-based reds, such as coral or brick red. These flatter golden or olive complexions and add warmth to your look.
- Neutral Undertones: You’re lucky—you can pull off most red shades! Experiment with both cool and warm tones to see what feels best.
- Consider the Occasion:
- Everyday Wear: Choose softer reds like tinted balms or sheer formulations for a subtle effect.
- Evening Glamour: Deep crimson or bold matte reds create a striking and sophisticated look.
- Test Before You Commit:
Always swatch a lipstick on your lips or the inner wrist to see how it works with your natural colouring. Lighting can also make a difference, so check it in natural light for the most accurate match. - Lip Liner is Your Friend:
Pair your red lipstick with a matching liner to prevent smudging and enhance the shape of your lips.
Embracing red lipstick is about finding the shade that makes you feel confident. Whether you’re channeling Old Hollywood or opting for a modern pop of colour, there’s a red for everyone.
