I have noticed recently that alot of brides and their entourage have been using LED light therapy masks before make up. This got me thinking – Why! I don’t know much about light therapy other than what I had learnt many years ago in the world of beauty. So thought I would delve in and see the benefits of these rather bizarre masks that make you look like something out of a horror movie.

What is a LED Mask?

LED or to give it its full name Light-Emitting Diode and LED light therapy, or “photobiomodulation” (PBM) as it’s more accurately known, uses gentle, low-level light within the visible spectrum—typically blue, red, or near-infrared—to stimulate natural physiological processes. Light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that enters the skin’s layers to improve the skin. Studies started in the 60s with a Hungarian physician named Endre Mester who shined a low-power laser on the shaved skin of a mouse and found it promoted hair growth. In 1990s studies found its effects promoted wound healing in Astronauts, helping cells and tissues to grow. It is used today to treat a range of skin issues. Skin specialists often use LED light therapy together with other treatments, such as creams, ointments and facials, to give you the best results.

You can buy an array of at-home devices that use LED light therapy, including LED masks.

Benefits of LED Masks for Home Therapy

We are told LED masks are a convenient and effective way to improve skin health and appearance from the comfort of your home. Here are the key benefits suggested: (scroll for conclusion)

1. Improves Skin Texture and Tone

LED light therapy stimulates skin cells, promoting collagen production and reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.

2. Reduces Acne and Breakouts

Blue light in LED masks targets acne-causing bacteria, helping to prevent and reduce breakouts while calming inflammation.

3. Boosts Collagen and Elasticity

Red light promotes collagen production, improving skin elasticity, firmness, and reducing the appearance of aging signs.

4. Minimizes Redness and Inflammation

LED therapy can help soothe sensitive or irritated skin by reducing inflammation and redness.

5. Enhances Skin Hydration

Near-infrared light enhances skin’s natural barrier function, helping it retain moisture for a healthy, hydrated glow.

6. Fades Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation

LED masks can reduce hyperpigmentation and brighten the skin for a more even complexion over time.

7. Convenient and Non-Invasive

This at-home therapy is safe, pain-free, and requires no downtime, making it a cost-effective alternative to professional treatments.

8. Customizable for Various Skin Concerns

Most LED masks offer multiple settings to address specific issues, such as acne, aging, or dullness, making them versatile for all skin types.

When used consistently and according to instructions, LED masks can deliver noticeable improvements in skin health and appearance. Always consult with a dermatologist if you have specific concerns or conditions.

But do they really work?

Professional LED light therapy uses more powerful strengths than at-home devices, which makes it more effective. With LED masks and other portable devices, you likely won’t see dramatic anti-aging or acne-reducing results. Also as we age our collagen and elastin depletes so the LED is unlikely to restore levels. You might experience subtle improvements in your skin’s appearance, though. Some home devices may also require a substantial time commitment. You might need to use your device twice a day for 30 to 60 minutes for four to five weeks. Other devices take just a few minutes a day. So 30 mins before your make up is unlikely to have much effect. You also need to be aware of scams as this is a bit of a buzz therapy at the moment there will be masks sold that shine a pretty red light but may have no benefits at all.

Conclusion

This is my POV, I am a beauty professional with many years experience, no scientist or expert in these things. Always interested in all new treatments, it seems to me the LED light therapy has benefits for problematic skin when performed by Dermatologists or trained professionals. The portable masks can have some minimal, but positive benefits to your skin when used regularly over a period of time, but dont expect miracles.
