Roses are red.

My lips are blue.

Oh my goodness!

what should I do?

Have you ever had difficulty choosing a lipstick that suits you. Or maybe you find that your red or pink lipstick goes a blue hue tone on your lips or perhaps that your favourite pink has a blue tone which does not seem to suit you.

The main reason for this difficulty and colour change is to do with the acidic PH balance in our skin. Skin PH is usually 4.5-5.5. If your balance falls in favour of acid you can find that many lipsticks take on a blue tone and if you swing the other way to alkaline it will perhaps add a little orange or yellow tone to your lips.

This is also why your lipstick shade doesnt look the same on your best friend as it does on you, or infact, the same colour will probably look slightly different on every wearer. We are all individuals after all so not such a bad thing.

The normal recommondation is to wear a lipstick tone that is the same as your skin tone. So to compliment, but I know in theory this does not always work. I have painted many lips over the years and when I run my make up workshops it is often the trickiest thing to select a lipstick colour for everyone. For instance, I am a pink toned skin, but one of my Wow lipsticks is a coral (orange) and another a pink tone red. Weird! There is alot of trial and error in this process, which can be expensive.

Colour correcting can help and what you wear can also make a difference on how the colour is perceived.

Like any artist a make up artist will use the colour wheel to mix colour to correct or find the most suited colours for a skin tone when doing a make up.

By using the opposite colour on the colour wheel you can counteract redness sallow skin and blueness.

So for lips that turn lipstick blue the opposite colour would be orange or yellow tones.

(excuse my crude painting of the wheel – blue is opposite orange green opposite red)

Suggestions

Here are some suggestions to try to counteract the blue tone of lips

Blue toned pink lip
  • You can try mixing the blue-toned lipstick with a warm-toned lipstick to create a custom shade that is more suitable for your skin tone. Start with a small amount of the warm or orange toned lipstick and mix it with the blue pink or blue red toned lipstick on the back of your hand. Adjust the ratio until you achieve the desired color, and then apply it to your lips using a lip brush.

  • Try using an orange tone colour corrector directly on your lips and lightly blot with powder then you apply your chosen lipstick
  • Use a warm-toned lip liner: Choose a lip liner in a warm, peachy, or coral tone that complements your skin tone. Apply the lip liner all over your lips, and blend it in well.

  • .Use a lip brush: Use a lip brush to blend the lipstick and lip liner together. This will help to create a smooth, even finish and remove any blue tones that may be present.Repeat if necessary:

  • If the blue tone is still visible, repeat the steps above until you achieve the desired colour.

  • Apply a warm-toned lipstick: Choose a lipstick that has warm undertones, such as peach, coral, or red.
