Who doesn’t love a sweep of a black eyeliner what ever your age -creating that precision line along the the top of your lashes, perhaps with a little flick. A question I am often asked – How do I do eyeliner now I’m older, it never goes on like it used too? Well the reality to this is that our eye shape changes as we get older, not only because of small lines around the eyes, but gravity plays its part in creating over hanging lids. Now, when you are applying eyeliner with your eye closed all can appear well, then you open your eye and the beautiful line you have envisaged is, how shall I say, a bit wonky.

How to apply Eyeliner on older eyes

This does not mean you cannot wear eyeliner as you get older, just change how you apply it. Try a finer line close to the lashline, slightly lift your brow to allow you to get close to your lashes and take the line just to the corner of your eye. If you want more of a statement look you can add a small flick, but check with eye open first and make a small dot where you want the line to end, making sure your lids won’t distort the line when you re open your eye.

You can also change what you use. A liquid eyeliner can be difficult to apply and quite bold. Invest in a small angle brush and use a dark grey or brown eyeshadow along the lash line, which gives a softer line. If you want a bolder look Gel eyeliners are good, also apply with a small angle or eyeliner brush. There are some great soft eyeliner pencils out there too. I’m not affiliated with any brands, but can suggest a couple I have tried and tested myself.
